Abstract
Hip arthroscopy is a useful minimally invasive surgical procedure for the diagnosis and treatment of hip pathologies. However, until just a few years ago, hip arthroscopy was not widely performed due to the complexity of the procedure, requirement of special instruments and a long learning curve. With the advances in the instruments and arthroscopic surgical technique, the frequency of arthroscopic treatment for hip disorders has increased since the last decade. Hip arthroscopy can be performed to treat intra-articular lesions such as labral tear, chondral lesion, femoroacetabular impingement, capsular laxity, synovial chondromatosis, ligamentum teres injury and extra-articular lesions such as snapping hip syndrome, gluteus medius muscle tear, trochanteric bursitis. In recent years, hip arthroscopy is being more widely used for treatment of the acetabular fracture and excision of the tumor. Although hip arthroscopy has several limitations such as high technical demand, need for specialized instruments, and long learning curve; hip arthroscopy is a safe procedure with almost no complications and contraindications. However, in order to achieve good outcomes, careful selection of patients and meticulous surgical technique are essential. The purpose of this article is to review the current position and future developments in hip arthroscopy.
